Project Description

Offering and receiving feedback are learned skills. As with any skill it takes practice to get better and better at them.

Following are the recommended exercises for getting started with great feedback.

Growing a feedback culture

Take a moment to jot down how your work life would improve by improving upon how you offer and receive feedback

What good feedback looks like

Write down some exchanges of feedback that you remember and use the tips from the video to write what a better exchange might have been like.

Top TIP

The actual practice of offering feedback can be a bit intimidating for some people. That's why I always recommend starting with appreciative feedback. If that is still a bit too much, as silly as it might seem, practice with either your own reflection in the mirror, your pet, or a rubber duck. Your brain is just not used to offering feedback. The more you do the practice run, the more familiar you make offering feedback to your brain.

How to offer appreciative feedback

Offer feedback to a colleague. If they accept, offer them an authentic gift of appreciative feedback about something that they did, or did for you. Create a habit by starting with one per day for a week, then two, then three, etc.

How to offer growth feedback

Now we're getting to the good stuff. For every ~4 pieces of appreciative feedback, offer 1 piece of growth feedback to a colleague. If they agree to the offer, share your feedback with them.
