Tissue Biology (edX)

Learn how cells work together to perform key body functions. Cells are the fundamental living unit of all organisms and they work harmoniously to help us experience and respond to the world around us. This course builds on the cell physiology content in the Specialized Cells course.

We investigate more specialized cells looking at muscle cells and exploring how contractile proteins produce muscular contraction. We then explore nerve-muscle function in depth, examining the complex neuromotor system which governs both the conscious and unconscious control of our muscle movement and coordination. Finally, we investigate how we experience the world through some of our sensory modalities.
This interactive course incorporates videos and insights from experts in human physiology with assessment to test your new understanding of cell physiology.
This course is part of the Cell Physiology Professional Certificate.

What you'll learn

  • Develop knowledge of specialised cells in the human body.
  • Appreciate the fundamental role of the nervous system in regulating body functions.
  • Develop an understanding of how cells associate as tissues and organs to perform body functions.
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of nerve-muscle function.

Prerequisites:

  • A basic understanding of cell structure and function in animals.
  • A broad knowledge of human body systems.
  • Elementary level Biology.
  • Completion of Specialized Cells is recommended, but not essential.

Learn the basics of sustainable processing for biobased products to further understand their impact on global sustainability. As fossil-based fuels and raw materials contribute to climate change, the use of renewable materials and energy as an alternative is increasingly important and common. This transition is not a luxury, but rather a necessity.

Neuropsychology (saylor.org)

How does the brain function? How does it interact with the body in order to control and mediate behaviors and actions? Though psychologists have long studied these questions, the workings of the brain remain, in large part, a mystery. In this course, we will explore the field of psychology devoted to the pursuit of these questions: neuropsychology or the study of the structure and function of the brain as it relates to psychological processes.

Histology: Using Microscopy to Study Anatomy and Identify Disease (FutureLearn)

Get an introduction to histology – the study of anatomy at a microscopic level – and find out how it is used to identify disease. Histology is a key part of modern medicine – it helps us study cells and tissues at a microscopic level, and accurately diagnose diseases such as cancer. This online course introduces the field. It starts with the basic principles of light microscopy, before focussing on the structure and function of human tissues, and the relationships between them.

Learn about the Earth, life, and how we can search for life elsewhere in the universe. Are we alone in this universe? What new information and observations on exoplanets have we discovered? In the past decade, astronomers have made incredible advances in the discovery of planets outside our solar system. Thirty years ago, we knew only of the planets in our own solar system. Now we know of thousands circling nearby stars.

Advanced Neurobiology II (Coursera)

Hello everyone! Welcome to advanced neurobiology! Neuroscience is a wonderful branch of science on how our brain perceives the external world, how our brain thinks, how our brain responds to the outside of the world, and how during disease or aging the neuronal connections deteriorate. We’re trying to understand the molecular, cellular nature and the circuitry arrangement of how nervous system works.
