Transport systems and transport policy: An introduction (Hasselt University)

This course is aimed at introducing the student to the transport system (the factors that drive this system), the impact the transport system has on accessibility, safety and the environment, and transport policy making and
evaluations.

Topics include:

  • Individual needs, opportunities and travel behaviour
  • land use and transport
  • transport resistance factors: time, money and effort
  • transport technology to reduce transport's negative impacts
  • accessibility: perspectives, measures and applications
  • transport and the environment
  • traffic safety
  • transport policy
  • transportation models and their applications

Growing traffic volumes and emerging vehicle technologies lead to major challenges in land use, impact on urban areas, road safety, traffic flows, pollution and travel behaviour. Transport is without a doubt one of the biggest challenges of our future. With transportation impacting our economy, our social lives and our health and well-being, it is important to safeguard a transport system that is fast, safe, clean and affordable. Failing to do so, will lead to more lost time in traffic, increasing road accident levels, global warming and rising transportation costs.

Marine litter is a global problem that affects our oceans. It is an environmental, human health and socio-economic problem that is symptomatic of a throw-away society. With worldwide growth in the amount of solid litter disposed of and slow rates of degradation, the amount of litter present in the marine environment is increasing exponentially. This MOOC is part of the Clean Seas Campaign and contributes to the mission of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML), which seeks to protect the global marine environment, human well-being and animal welfare by addressing the challenges of marine litter.
