Transport systems and transport policy: An introduction (Hasselt University)

Offered by Hasselt University,
Transport systems and transport policy: An introduction (Hasselt University)

This course is aimed at introducing the student to the transport system (the factors that drive this system), the impact the transport system has on accessibility, safety and the environment, and transport policy making and
evaluations.

Topics include:

  • Individual needs, opportunities and travel behaviour
  • land use and transport
  • transport resistance factors: time, money and effort
  • transport technology to reduce transport's negative impacts
  • accessibility: perspectives, measures and applications
  • transport and the environment
  • traffic safety
  • transport policy
  • transportation models and their applications

Growing traffic volumes and emerging vehicle technologies lead to major challenges in land use, impact on urban areas, road safety, traffic flows, pollution and travel behaviour. Transport is without a doubt one of the biggest challenges of our future. With transportation impacting our economy, our social lives and our health and well-being, it is important to safeguard a transport system that is fast, safe, clean and affordable. Failing to do so, will lead to more lost time in traffic, increasing road accident levels, global warming and rising transportation costs.
Are you interested to help shape the future of transportation? Then, please, join our MOOC 'Transport systems and transport policy: an introduction'. Feeling inspired by the MOOC and eager to learn more about transportation? Our MOOC is part of the preparatory programme of the master programme Transportation Sciences.

This course deals with both renewable and non-renewable energy. By applying scientific principles and considering real-world examples, you will examine: 1. Non-renewable fossil fuels with a focus on coal, petroleum and natural gas and the benefits and consequences of using each. 2. Renewable fuels such as wind and solar and identify that even renewable “green” energy sources have impacts as well as benefits. 3. Biodiversity and global change, which are the integrating units of environmental science.

Climate change and migration: predictions, politics and policy (Climate Outreach)

How will climate change reshape migration? And what are governments planning to do about it? This online course examines these questions in depth. Over the space of 10 months, this course examines the major issues around climate-linked migration and displacement. Climate change is set to play a key role in patterns of human settlement and migration in the future. Altered patterns of drought, storms and sea level rise are already creating new patterns of migration.

Marine Litter MOOC (OU)

Marine litter is a global problem that affects our oceans. It is an environmental, human health and socio-economic problem that is symptomatic of a throw-away society. With worldwide growth in the amount of solid litter disposed of and slow rates of degradation, the amount of litter present in the marine environment is increasing exponentially. This MOOC is part of the Clean Seas Campaign and contributes to the mission of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML), which seeks to protect the global marine environment, human well-being and animal welfare by addressing the challenges of marine litter. The MOOC is available in 10 different languages.

Promoting Accessible Workplaces with Assistive Technology (Coursera)

Workplaces and educational institutions are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of inclusivity in their forces, and there are significant efforts being made to promote cultures of inclusivity. Despite that, the needs of disabled workers and students remain largely overlooked by a working society of abled persons even though great advances have been made in widely available Assistive Technology. In this course, learners will gain increased awareness of many types of disabilities represented in the workforce and educational institutions.
