And how do 'they' create melodies that sound so amazing?
Or perhaps you wonder how to access vocal freedom without worrying about the technical aspects of singing?

In this class you will learn how to sing in tune and control your voice. By training your ear with your own voice you will also expand your musical vocabulary for creating more interesting melodies and the ability to improvise. You will explore why listening is so important and what effect it has on your musicality.
No more tension or stress about singing. With the tools you will learn in this class you will be able to take your singing to the next level and open yourself up to creativity with freedom and ease.

In this class you will

  • Learn about musical intervals and their usage
  • Discover a vocal technique for ear training
  • Practice listening which will lead you towards being a confident singer
  • Improve the quality of your vocal sound
  • Expand your musical vocabulary
  • Gain more control in managing your own voice
  • Gain confidence in the sound you produce

I have personally experienced what it feels like to be constantly worried about singing in tune and missing out on the wonderful process of singing with ease. I have struggled to find the right tools to help me until I developed this method. Besides singing in tune this technique will open up the possibilities for you to explore more complex melodies and will also help you to connect with your voice and your body.
There are plenty of different techniques these days, here I will share something that helped me out a lot and opened up more freedom for my voice.

Project Description
For your final project you will be invited to create a single track toning on all the intervals we will explore in the course.
It is entirely up to you if you want to sing the intervals in order or take it to next level and explore them in your own way. The key here is for you to focus on the sound you produce and its relationship to the drone sound.
It is all about listening and creating that perfect harmony that will make your heart sing!
In this class we are working in the key of C and using a C drone sound. Feel free to explore singing in different keys.
For your home practice you can download an app for Mac | Android
Or simply use this or any backing track of drone sound

Jazz Improvisation (Coursera)

Learn the basic concepts of improvisation from Gary Burton, one of the most renowned improvisers in the jazz world, including the mental, melodic, and harmonic processes that contribute to the instinctive skills that an improviser puts to use when taking a solo. While many people are fans of jazz and understand that musicians are often “making up” the notes they are playing during a performance, most people—often including musicians, themselves, who are beginning to learn improvising—aren’t clear about what exact processes take place to enable this to happen. The purpose of this course is to introduce the basic concepts of modern improvisation and how to go about mastering the different musical and mental skills involved.

In this class we will be looking at a few vocal layering methods that will help thicken out our lead vocals as well as create full background vocals. The lead layering found in the first few videos is a great practice to filling out a chorus and can also be used to get a wide modern vocal sound at any point in the song. In the last video we look at separate background vocals and how variation in timbre can lead to a wide professional sound.
