Making a Paper Prototype for a Mobile App (Skillshare)
In this class you will learn how to make a paper prototype of a mobile app for early stage usability testing. Testing paper prototypes can save time in the design process by catching problems early on, before recreating the design digitally in an application like Sketch or Figma. We’ll go over: Why paper prototypes are useful; When you might make one, and what you should know beforehand; How to make a paper prototype step by step (This is the class project).

Some general knowledge UX and the design process is useful, but not necessary for this class. I will provide the background information you would need leading up to the paper prototyping phase.

For this class project, you will make a paper prototype of a mobile app. Steps for the project are:

1. Prepare a device template.

2. Draw the screens.

3. Add a little color!

4. Make some smaller pieces to lay on top.

5. Practice the flow of switching out screens

I’ll walk you through this process for an app that lets users read and write reviews for TV shows and movies across different streaming platforms. I made the app up for this class, but if you’re feeling extra creative, you can follow along with your own idea!

The finished product will be a paper prototype you can test with users in the early stages of the design process. You can see my prototype in the resources provided. I can’t wait to see your projects in the gallery!
