Introduction to Education for Sustainability (Canvas.net)

This online learning community has been designed to provide a foundation in EfS, and the six-week course engages participants in activities that combine systems thinking, sustainable economics, and the science of sustainability, and is open to anyone interested in gaining awareness and new ways of thinking about prosperity, responsible citizenship, and the restoration of our living systems.

The Cloud Institute’s Education for Sustainability (EfS) online course is designed to increase participants’ awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the core concepts, content, and habits of mind that characterize Sustainability and Education for Sustainability (EfS). This online learning community has been designed to provide a foundation in EfS, and the six-week course engages participants in activities that combine systems thinking, sustainable economics, and the science of sustainability, and is open to anyone interested in gaining awareness and new ways of thinking about prosperity, responsible citizenship, and the restoration of our living systems.

This course will show you how to build a massive open online course (MOOC), including lots of tips and tricks, at an affordable cost. It covers content creation and content sourcing from the web, assessment at large scale using quizzes and peer assignments, communication between learners and course design. Not only will this course show you how to build a MOOC, it will provide you with support from tutors and fellow participants for four months. Depending on your level of interest, it will require between two and four hours of effort per week. This course is offered by a team from five European institutions working in content development, online learning and MOOCs.

The film, “Girl Rising,” opens with Sokha, a Cambodian girl in a golden costume, dancing in slow motion. Suddenly, the camera shifts to her life before she was given the chance to get an education—Sokha’s previous life picking trash. How did she get from the dump to dance? This course will focus on four themes directly related to the education of girls worldwide: (1) access and equity, (2) public health, (3) education in emergencies, and (4) empowerment. We will examine (a) research: the data around the education of girls, as well as analyses, images, and stories; (b) relationship: how new learning about girls’ education relates to our practice; and (c) results: the capacity to make a measurable difference in and for our classrooms, our communities, and the world.
