Innovate & Regulate: Drug Research, Costs, Clinical Trials & Approval (edX)

At some point in their life, essentially everyone needs to use medication for some type of disease treatment or cure. While medications offer great benefits, the cost of drugs, especially new drugs, and the lack of treatment for some diseases can raise questions about business activity behind the creation of new drugs. Better understanding of how drugs are discovered and developed as well as the legal and regulatory factors that affect the industry can help one better recognize both the shortcomings and opportunities faced by the drug industry at large.

Medicines Adherence: Supporting Patients with their Treatment (FutureLearn)

How can healthcare professionals help patients to improve their health through medicines adherence? It is estimated that 30-50% of patients do not take their medicines as prescribed. So how should we, as healthcare professionals, respond? As medicines are key to the successful management of chronic conditions, underuse or non-adherence represents a lost opportunity for the health improvement for the patient as well as being a waste of valuable resources for healthcare systems. In Europe alone, the cost of poor adherence to treatment is estimated at 195,000 lives and €20 billion annually.

Big Data Science with the BD2K-LINCS Data Coordination and Integration Center (Coursera)

In this course we briefly introduce the DCIC and the various Centers that collect data for LINCS. We then cover metadata and how metadata is linked to ontologies. We then present data processing and normalization methods to clean and harmonize LINCS data. This follow discussions about how data is served as RESTful APIs. Most importantly, the course covers computational methods including: data clustering, gene-set enrichment analysis, interactive data visualization, and supervised learning. Finally, we introduce crowdsourcing/citizen-science projects where students can work together in teams to extract expression signatures from public databases and then query such collections of signatures against LINCS data for predicting small molecules as potential therapeutics.
