Technology clusters for the Next Production Revolution in Africa (POK)

Offered by Politecnico di Milano,
Technology clusters for the Next Production Revolution in Africa (POK)

A short introduction to Additive Manufacturing and Smart Agriculture as enabling technology clusters for NPR. The course is part of a series of Sprint MOOC addressing the Next Production Revolution paradigma, as new wave of technological innovation. It addresses people from anywhere in the world, from industrialized economies as well as from “developing countries” and particularly from Africa.

This specific course is focused on two main clusters of the Next Production Revolution paradigma.

  • The first one is Additive Manufacturing, that is also popularly reknown as 3D printing, and refers to any process where digital 3D design data is used to build up a component by adding the material layer by layer.
  • The second one is Smart agriculture, defined as an integrated farm management framework that constitutes a holistic management approach aiming to optimize the yield per unit of farming land.

After taking this Sprint MOOC you’ll be able to define the main concepts underpinning these topics, to recognise their application fields, to identify the useful technologies and the major enabling factors affecting the decision of adopting them.

3D Printing Capstone

The capstone will integrate the learning acquired from the four courses in the 3D Printing Specialization through a hands-on project. This project will enable you to turn an idea into an object using the knowledge and skills acquired through the other courses. Specifically, you will be guided through a step-by-step process in which you imagine, design, make, and share a 3D printed object. Thus, through this capstone, you will be able to put course concepts into action and utilize the skills that you have acquired throughout the Specialization.

Children Acquiring Literacy Naturally (Coursera)

In this short course you will explore the possibility that children might acquire written language in a way that is similar to how they acquire spoken language—without instruction. You will encounter various aspects of behavioral science and technology that are relevant to this proposition. You will have the opportunity to learn the the perceptual, cognitive, and neurological capacities of children during their first years of life. You will advance your understanding of children and how they learn language. You will also be more attuned to current advances in the technology of human machine interactions, and what these phenomena imply for learning to read at an early age.

Fundamentals of Operations (POK)

This course introduces the key theories, concepts, models and approaches related to Production and Logistics Systems. Operations are those processes through which companies produce and distribute products and services to their customers. They are fundamental for two main reasons: on the one hand, they impact the costs companies have to face and, on the other hand, they strongly affect the service level seen by the customers.

Energy management for real estate - Fundamentals, methods and digital tools (POK)

This MOOC will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge to address the energy management process in real estate. The figure of the Energy Manager (EM), introduced in the United States in the early 1970s, during the first oil crisis, brought to light the need to get more work out of less energy. In Italy, this figure was officially introduced by Law 308/82, but had its first strong impulse thanks to Law 10/91, aimed at implementing the National Energy Plan on the rational use of energy, energy saving and the development of renewable energy sources.

Converter Control (Coursera)

This course teaches how to design a feedback system to control a switching converter. The equivalent circuit models derived in the previous courses are extended to model small-signal ac variations. These models are then solved, to find the important transfer functions of the converter and its regulator system. Finally, the feedback loop is modeled, analyzed, and designed to meet requirements such as output regulation, bandwidth and transient response, and rejection of disturbances.
