Pre-University Chemistry (edX)

Pre-University Chemistry (edX)

Prepare for university by reviewing the science and technology of chemistry. Become familiar with the way chemistry and chemistry-related topics are taught at university level. Chemistry is the fundamental discipline that helps us explain properties, structure, and behavior of matter. A solid foundation in chemistry is of importance in addressing today’s challenges with innovative chemical technological solutions.

This course provides you with an opportunity to revisit the fundamentals of chemistry, either out of personal interest or to ensure that you are adequately equipped for the first year of your Bachelor's degree.
You will acquire a solid understanding of the fundamental chemical concepts and see how they can be applied to real-world problems, in areas including: energy transition, chemistry of health and new materials.
The course not only covers the content needed for further study, but it also introduces the different ways in which chemistry is taught at the university-level.
This course is intended for:
Prospective university students who seek a review
High school students who want an additional challenge in chemistry not offered by their school
Students who have already started at university who realize that they have a knowledge gap
Professionals who want to broaden their knowledge or are looking for a refresher course

What you'll learn
After taking this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry
  • Apply principles of chemistry in various science and engineering contexts
  • Perform quantitative calculations and apply basic calculus to solve chemical problems
  • Combine knowledge from different areas of chemistry to solve advanced problems

University Studies for Student Veterans (edX)

This course helps veterans transition smoothly from military service to college, and helps them maximize their success once they arrive. The skills you learned in the military will go a long way toward helping you succeed in college, but if you’re looking for some extra support – or an academic tune-up – then you’ll find it in this course. We know that the culture of higher education is different from the culture of the military in meaningful ways, and we also know that one of the keys to excelling in college - especially for student veterans - is learning to navigate these differences successfully, right from the very start.

DNA and Atoms: The Secret of Life (edX)

Learn about DNA structure, how atoms are bonded to make DNA molecules and the periodic table, through Nobel lectures and key scientific papers. In this chemistry course, you will learn about “Life in the Universe." We will explore DNA as genetic material and atoms as the building blocks of life. We will discuss the discovery and key features of the double helical structure of DNA and the chemical principles behind the sugar-phosphate backbone and hydrogen bonding in the base pairs will be emphasized.

Quantum Mechanics (edX)

Learn the quantum mechanics needed to prepare you for the second quantum revolution (focused on quantum sensing). We use a new way to teach quantum for undergraduates by focusing on conceptual ideas and operator manipulations. This allows us to discuss more applications to experiment usually done. You need a background in the full calculus sequence and in math methods. Freshman physics and modern physics is recommended. This course is appropriate for physicists, chemists and engineers.

Food for Thought (edX)

A course that offers a scientific framework for understanding food and its impact on health and society from past to present. Eating and understanding the nuances of food has become a complicated and often confusing experience. Virtually every day brings news about some “miracle food” that we should be consuming or some "poison" we should be avoiding.

Effects of Radiation: An Introduction to Radiation and Radioactivity (edX)

There are many practical applications of radiation and radioactivity in various fields, including medical, scientific, and industrial activities. In some parts of Japan, people continue to experience environmental radioactivity caused by the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on a daily basis. Understanding the basic science of radiation and radioactivity will form the base of the course, with specific examples from Japan and elsewhere in the world to illustrate concepts.
