WEEK 3
The Newborn Assessment: Heart Health
Congenital heart diseases, that is, malformations of the heart that begin in fetal life and are present at birth, are some of the most common congenital anomalies. One percent of all children are born with cardiac anomalies. Of those, about 25% have critical congenital heart disease, heart disease that requires intervention during the first month of life in order to avoid death or disability. In the CCHD screening lectures from Course I, CCHD from Course 2 and its cases, you were introduced to the concept of congenital heart disease, when to think about it and how to diagnose it. These are important skills to master, as these congenital problems, when not treated, can result in disability and even death for your young patients.
In this capstone module, you will be presented with two cases, one extensive, the other brief. These are meant to represent the range of heart disease that you may encounter in practice. You will be asked to evaluate these cases in several ways.

WEEK 4
The Newborn Assessment: Lung Health

We will apply the information we learned about the respiratory exam to work through a case of a newborn with respiratory distress

WEEK 5
Comprehensive Assessment to Keep Newborn Babies Safe & Healthy
Learners, you are nearing the end of your training in the Care of the Newborn Baby. In this final Capstone segment, you will be asked to synthesize much of what you have learned about well newborn care. In the real world, this occurs in the outpatient setting. In some places, this visit would occur in an office or clinic. Another option is for a medical provider to visit the family in their home. Regardless of where the meeting takes place, the concerns are the same.
In the following case, you will be presented with information regarding a newborn’s first visit to her primary care provider. You will be asked to explain how you would approach some of the aspects of baby’s care.
