HIV Treatment and Prevention in Asia (AME)

Offered by Virology Education,
HIV Treatment and Prevention in Asia (AME)

This Online Education Activity is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) for 1 European CME credit (ECMEC®).
 Welcome to the HIV Treatment and Prevention in Asia edition of the Online Meeting Highlights. Here you will learn about the use of PrEP and INSTIs in Asia as well as the prevalence of HIV drug resistance across the region, and its implications on the decision-making process when designing an optimal treatment regimen.

You will find out if drug resistance is evenly distributed within the region, or whether there are striking differences among countries, and how this reflects on the need for baseline screening. This will be complemented with a comprehensive overview of clinical data on integrase inhibitors-based regimens with regard to their efficacy, tolerability, potential drug-drug interactions, and recommendations in case of HBV or TB co-infection. Alongside this, you will learn about the remaining challenges to scale-up pre-exposure prophylaxis, and how to overcome those by a concerted effort of community and policymakers.

This edition will shed light on the prevalence of HIV drug resistance across Asia and the Pacific region, and its implications on the decision-making process when designing an optimal treatment regimen.
After watching this educational series, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate clinical data on integrase inhibitors-based regimens in Asia with regard to their efficacy, tolerability, potential drug-drug interactions, and recommendations in case of pregnancy, HBV or TB co-infection;
  • Reflect on the epidemiology of HIV drug resistance across Asia, and understand its implications for clinical and public health implementation;
  • Describe progress with implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis, map remaining challenges, and outline strategies to scale-up.

To obtain your certificate, you have complete all three modules, passed the relevant assessments and answered the evaluation survey.

Module 1 | Use of INSTIs in Asia

Module 2 | HIV Drug Resistance in Asia

Module 3 | Update on PrEP Use in Asia

Duration: approximately 20 minutes per module

You can enhance your learning experience by:

  • adding notes to the video modules;
  • consulting the accompanying presentation slides;
  • sharing your questions and observations with other learners in the discussion board; and
  • referring to further literature and other materials provided to you by our experts.

The program is aimed at clinicians from various specialties who occasionally treat HIV patients, such as primary care physicians, family doctors, OBGYN, transgender healthcare clinicians, adolescent medicine professionals, and preventive medicine professionals, as well as public health workers and researchers engaged in HIV related disciplines at varying degrees.

Vital Signs: Understanding What the Body Is Telling Us (Coursera)

The vital signs – heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, respiration rate, and pain – communicate important information about the physiological status of the human body. In this six-part course we explore the anatomy and physiology underlying the vital signs so that you will develop a systematic, integrated understanding of how the body functions.

The course will cover the topics related to antimicrobial resistance with basic definitions and overview on antimicrobials their use and the emergence and spread of resistance. The course will guide you through the concepts and the importance of resistance spread and dissemination and how that happens. It will show you how bacteria become resistant and which mechanisms they might use for this. And as part of the course you will also receive some training in methods for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and detection of specific resistance in the microbiological laboratories with the basic methods available and with focus on the obtention of good quality results which can be interpreted and used for different purposes.

Synapses, Neurons and Brains (Coursera)

These are very unique times for brain research. The aperitif for the course will thus highlight the present “brain-excitements” worldwide. You will then become intimately acquainted with the operational principles of neuronal “life-ware” (synapses, neurons and the networks that they form) and consequently, on how neurons behave as computational microchips and how they plastically and constantly change - a process that underlies learning and memory.

Community Change in Public Health (Coursera)

In bringing about behavior change in public health, we often focus on the individual mother, student, or farmer. We should not forget the community structure and norms constrain for encouraging individual health behaviors. This course examines the community context of the changes needed to promote the public’s health. We begin by examining the various definitions of ‘community’ and the processes by which we ‘diagnose’ or seek to understand the structure and characteristics of different types of communities.
