English Language Teaching: Classroom Management (Coursera)

The course will introduce students to important aspects of classroom management: class size and mixed abilities, grouping students, and error correction and feedback. It will look at how teaching a large class differs from teaching one-to-one, how to teach different content, and issues in teaching different students and special educational needs (SENs). Students will be exposed to ways of organizing whole-class work, pair work and group work, and individualized work.

Finally, the course will cover different types of students’ errors and how to deal with them, how to deliver supportive feedback, and ways of providing feedback for both written and spoken English. By the end of the course, students will have a fuller understanding of classroom management in English Language Teaching.

Syllabus

WEEK 1
Intoduction

WEEK 2
Module 1. Class size & mixed abilities
You will watch 3 lectures about the features of teaching large classes and teaching one-to-one, the challenges associated with these modes and the specifics of teaching learners of different age groups and learners with special educational needs (SENs). You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.

WEEK 3
Module 2. Grouping students
You will watch 3 lectures about different ways of grouping learners in an ELT class, specifically whole-class work, pair work, group work and individualized work. The lectures will explore both the advantages and disadvantages of each of these types. You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.

WEEK 4
Module 3. Error correction & feedback
You will watch 3 lectures about different types of errors that learners of English make, and how these need or do not need to be corrected. The module will consider errors per se, slips, attempts, and developmental errors. You will also explore the difference between oral and written feedback. You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.
