Cultural Diversity in Your Classroom-Rerun (SchoolEducationGateway)

Cultural Diversity in Your Classroom-Rerun (SchoolEducationGateway)

The course offers teachers an opportunity to access useful resources and exchange with peers on the challenging topic of cultural diversity in classrooms. The course is part of a 3-part series of courses exploring the topic of cultural diversity, the situation of newly arrived migrants in general and how to integrate newly arrived migrant students in schools and classrooms.

In this first course of the series, participants will have the opportunity: to share their experiences of working with a culturally diverse student body, to discuss different scenarios of the positive use of cultural diversity as a learning context, to analyse teaching and other resources under the prism of effective intercultural communication, and to develop classroom activities that will potentially recognise and strengthen the class community as a culturally diverse environment.

The course is relevant to any teacher working in a culturally diverse environment or interested in developing students’ cultural awareness and expression.
The course lasts 3 weeks covering two modules. Module 1 looks at how to develop intercultural competences, and Module 2 explores how to recognize and value cultural diversity for learning in the classroom.
Upon completion of the course, participants are awarded a digital certificate and digital badges. If all three courses as part of the series are completed, a special certificate and recognition is awarded on top of the individual course certificates. The other courses in the course series are:

  • Raising Awareness about the Situation of Newly Arrived Migrants - launch date 27th March 2017
  • Newly Arrived Migrant Students in Schools & Classrooms - launch date 1st May 2017

e-Learning Ecologies: Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning for the Digital Age (Coursera)

For three decades and longer we have heard educators and technologists making a case for the transformative power of technology in learning. However, despite the rhetoric, in many ways and at most institutional sites, education is still relatively untouched by technology. Even when technologies are introduced, the changes sometimes seem insignificant and the results seem disappointing. If the print textbook is replaced by an e-book, do the social relations of knowledge and learning necessarily change at all or for the better?
