Planning & Design of Sanitation Systems and Technologies (Coursera)

Do you want to learn how to plan affordable and context-specific sanitation solutions? Do you want to be updated on the newest developments in urban sanitation planning and programming? Do you want to get insights about best practices examples of urban sanitation systems in low- and middle-income countries? If yes, this course is for you!

The course starts with an introduction about integrated sanitation planning, dealing with citywide planning as well as with planning for specific contexts such as informal settlements. MOOC SERIES “SANITATION, WATER AND SOLID WASTE FOR DEVELOPMENT”

This course is one of four in the series “Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development".

Syllabus

WEEK 1

Introduction to sanitation planning & systems approach

The course will begin with an overview of why sanitation is important for human health and environmental protection, especially in urban areas. This is followed by a presentation of the importance of the Enabling Environment. It will then review existing state-of-the-art environmental sanitation planning approaches (Sanitation 21, CLUES, CLTS) that are currently being used in international development.

WEEK 2

Sanitation systems & technologies

After presenting different sanitation planning frameworks you will learn about the systems approach to environmental sanitation – the key terminology and concepts and why systems’ thinking is crucial for urban environmental sanitation.

WEEK 3

Sanitation systems & technologies

The focus of week 3 provides a detailed overview of different sanitation systems, from simple the single pit system to more complex centralised treatment systems. The main treatment processes are then reviewed in detail, highlighting advantages and disadvantages of each.

WEEK 4

Urban sanitation solutions - Case studies

In this week we’ll present case studies from Africa and Asia showing different sanitation solutions from neighbourhood to national scale.

WEEK 5

Urban sanitation tools

Week 5 presents various urban sanitation tools, such a excreta flow diagrams (SFD’s) or sanitation safety planning. This week will be updated in the first months of 2017.
