HIV in Africa: Meeting the Challenge (AME)

Diagnostics remains at the cornerstone of universal efforts to end the HIV epidemic, with an extremely rich pipeline of tools and convenience of point of care testing available nowadays. Learn about major concerns in selecting a suitable assay, and how to balance optimally between improved patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness. Welcome to the HIV in Africa: Meeting the Challenge edition of the Online Meeting Highlights. Here you will learn about the major concerns in selecting a suitable assay, and how to balance optimally between improved patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness.

This Online Education Activity is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) for 1 European CME credit (ECMEC®).

Another important pillar to bring the HIV epidemic to an end is effective prevention. We are currently in the midst of an exciting chapter with many new strategies being clinically evaluated. Increase your knowledge of the science behind the U=U concept, and the latest developments in biomedical approaches to contain the spread of HIV.

All modules can be followed independently and at your own pace. Complete the entire course to equip yourself with the knowledge to address these specific challenges in your care and treatment of patients with HIV.
Each edition of the Online Meeting Highlights educational series contains three modules which can be followed in any order.
After watching this educational series, you will be able to:

  • Describe HIV diagnostic tools with a focus on point of care testing;
  • Outline existing gaps and strategies to reduce HIV transmission in Africa;
  • Increase knowledge on the U=U concept, and recent development in biomedical approaches for HIV prevention.

To obtain your certificate, you have complete all three modules, passed the relevant assessments and answered the feedback surveys.
Module 1 | Preventing HIV Transmission in Africa: What We Need To Do in the Next Five Years
Module 2 | HIV, TB, and Malaria: What We Have Learned and What Needs To Be Done
Module 3 | Optimal Use of HIV Diagnostics in Africa

Duration: approximately 20 minutes per module
You can enhance your learning experience by:

  • adding notes to the video modules;
  • consulting the accompanying presentation slides;
  • sharing your questions and observations with other learners in the discussion board; and
  • referring to further literature and other materials provided to you by our experts.

The program is aimed at clinicians from various specialties who occasionally treat HIV patients, such as primary care physicians, family doctors, OBGYN, transgender healthcare clinicians, adolescent medicine professionals, and preventive medicine professionals, as well as public health workers and researchers engaged in HIV related disciplines at varying degrees.

Anatomy of the Upper and Lower Extremities (Coursera)

This course has two main parts, one for the lower extremity and the other for the upper extremity. We will show how the various systems that supply and organize the limb control its function. There are a set of introductory lectures which will allow more experienced students to refresh their knowledge of the limbs and a guide to those with less experience. These lectures will be followed by detailed dissections of the extremities emphasizing locomotion for the lower extremities and hand positioning and function for the upper extremities.

Clinical Epidemiology (Coursera)

Evidence forms the basis of modern medicine. Clinical research provides us with this evidence, guiding health professionals towards solutions to problems that they face in daily practice. Transferring existing problems in medical practice to a research setting is a challenging process that requires careful consideration. The practice of clinical epidemiology aims to address this through the application of established approaches for research in human populations, while at all times focussing on the problem at hand from a clinical perspective.

Understanding Patient Perspectives on Medications (Coursera)

Inappropriate use of medicines harms patients’ health and increases healthcare costs. When healthcare professionals and patients engage together, healthcare can be based on the patient perspective, so the use of medicines is better tailored to each patients’ needs and preferences. The result is a better relationship between patients and healthcare professionals, more appropriate medicines use, improved patients’ outcomes, and reduced healthcare costs. In this course you will learn about the patient perspective on medicines use, and how to explore and apply it in healthcare and health policy.
