Thermodynamics (edX)

Introduction to basic concepts and applications of thermodynamics in mechanical engineering. ME209x is a basic course in thermodynamics, designed for students of mechanical engineering. We will study the terms and concepts used in thermodynamics, with precise definitions. The three laws of thermodynamics (zeroth, first, and second) will be explored in detail, and the properties of materials will be studied.

Many useful relations will be derived. The topics include:

  • basic concepts and definitions
  • the work interaction
  • the first law, energy, and the heat interaction
  • the zeroth law, temperature, and scales of temperature
  • properties of gases and liquids, equations of state
  • the second law, thermodynamic temperature scales, and entropy
  • relations between properties
  • open thermodynamic systems

There will be emphasis on problem-solving. Students will need to spend significant effort on solving exercises. The course is designed for students in mechanical engineering. However, others (both engineers and scientists) are likely to find it useful. The course has also been found to be useful to teachers of thermodynamics.
Please note that this course is self-paced and you can enroll at any time. At normal pace, this course requires 12 weeks of study, about 10 hours a week.

What you'll learn

  • How to relate the zeroth, first and second laws to basic thermodynamic properties, like energy, temperature, and entropy, and to interactions like work and heat
  • How to interpret entropy change and entropy production and the related terms isentropic and reversible
  • How to derive property relations in an easy manner, and get used to the steam tables
  • Solve problems by applying the first and second law of thermodynamics

Effects of Radiation: An Introduction to Radiation and Radioactivity (edX)

There are many practical applications of radiation and radioactivity in various fields, including medical, scientific, and industrial activities. In some parts of Japan, people continue to experience environmental radioactivity caused by the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on a daily basis. Understanding the basic science of radiation and radioactivity will form the base of the course, with specific examples from Japan and elsewhere in the world to illustrate concepts.

The Chemistry of Life (edX)

Learn how to generate ideas at the interface between chemistry and biology. Chemistry and biology are traditionally taught as separate subjects at the high school level, where students memorize fundamental scientific principles that are universally accepted. However, at the university level and in industry, we learn that science is not as simple as we once thought. We are constantly confronted by questions about the unknown and required to use creative, integrated approaches to solve these problems.

Electrochemistry (edX)

Learn the significance of electrochemistry, understanding how electrical, chemical, and mechanical energy are linked. What is the chemistry and mechanics behind an electric car versus a gas-powered car — and why do you feel a difference driving them? The discipline of electrochemistry is not new, but it has regained prominence due to the emergence of energy production, energy storage, and technological innovations driven by both science and public policy. Given the rise of global energy demand, research and inventions aim to meet these challenges.

Cement Chemistry and Sustainable Cementitious Materials (edX)

Learn the basics of cement chemistry and laboratory best practices for assessment of its key properties. Every day, we see concrete used all around us – to build our houses, offices, schools, bridges, and infrastructure. But few people actually understand what gives concrete its strength, resistance, and utility. The aim of this course is to offer basic cement chemistry to practitioners, as well as new students in the fields of chemistry and engineering.
