Environmental Engineering: Drinking Water Treatment (edX)

Environmental Engineering: Drinking Water Treatment (edX)

Understand what makes water clean or dirty and what are being done at water treatment facilities to make water safe to drink. This course will cover fundamental science and engineering principles dealing with natural and water environmental systems. First, we focus on what influences water quality and what are sources, characteristics, and effects of water pollutants. Second, we will explore the basic chemical concepts needed to understand how pollutants may change their forms and influence water quality.

Finally, we will learn different physicochemical processes used at drinking water treatment processes and how they will remove water pollutants and improve the water quality.

What you'll learn

  • What determines the quality of water
  • Relevant chemistry in water environment that are useful to understand how water quality is influenced by various chemical constituents and how to apply it for treatment processes
  • What are essential drinking water treatment processes

Syllabus

The Next Generation of Infrastructure (edX)

Explore the challenges and complexity of both global and local infrastructure (IT/Telecom, Energy, Water and Transportation) and how to make the best decisions to improve it. We increasingly depend on reliable and affordable supply of energy, water, transport, telecommunication and information services to improve livability and facilitate economic development. However, today's infrastructure systems are drastically changing. They are becoming more and more web-based, interconnected and transnational, with increasingly fragmented public and private ownership, while new technologies are on their way.

Nitrogen: A Global Challenge (edX)

Learn about the global nitrogen challenge, how nitrogen has helped human civilization to develop, and how its misuse now threatens us. It’s a perfect storm. Limited food, water and energy unequally spread between an expanding population, and a warming climate as the bitter icing on the cake. In all these global challenges nitrogen has a leading role to play. Here you will learn just how hard-wired into all of human civilisation nitrogen is, and whether the future will see it as our quiet savior or the toxic villain of the piece.
