Design of Urban Water Management Structures (edX)

Offered by Purdue University, PurdueX,
Design of Urban Water Management Structures (edX)

Compute design rainfall, calculate runoff and stormwater flows; design storm sewer systems and detention storage structures. Detention storage structures and storm sewer systems are used to store and transport rainfall-runoff through open ditched and underground pipes.

In this course, we will:

  • Learn about spatial distribution of rainfall, perform statistical analysis, fit different distributions to the data, and calculate design rainfall.
  • Learn to estimate runoff using the rational method and time of concentration, and use the SCS-CN method to determine the time distribution of runoff. Unit hydrograph theory and computation of storm hydrographs will be covered.
  • Use regulations to design storm sewer systems using EPA-SWMM.
  • Compute storage volumes for detention storage structures.

What you'll learn

  • Determine design rainfall and calculate runoff using rational method, SCS curve number method and unit hydrograph theory.
  • Calculate stormwater flows.
  • Analyze and design storm sewer systems and detention storage volumes by rational method.
  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems.

Syllabus

Week 1: Rainfall temporal and spatial variation, design rainfall and hydrologic risk
Week 2: Runoff using Rational Method, storm sewer design
Week 3: Detention storage design, SCS CN method
Week 4: Hydrographs, SCS triangular and curvilinear unit hydrographs
Week 5: Superposition, computing runoff hydrographs from unit hydrograph theory

Super-Earths And Life (edX)

Learn about the Earth, life, and how we can search for life elsewhere in the universe. Are we alone in this universe? What new information and observations on exoplanets have we discovered? In the past decade, astronomers have made incredible advances in the discovery of planets outside our solar system. Thirty years ago, we knew only of the planets in our own solar system. Now we know of thousands circling nearby stars.

A System View of Communications: From Signals to Packets (Part 1) (edX)

Explore the tradeoffs in designing communication systems like mobile phones, and the engineering tools to handle them. Have you ever wondered how information is transmitted using your mobile phone or a WiFi hotspot? This introductory course seeks to enable you to understand the basic engineering tools used and tradeoffs encountered in the design of these systems.

New paradigms in wastewater management (Coursera)

This MOOC is aimed at providing key elements in relation to the management of the urban water cycle, including both conventional goals and the challenges of the smart cities of the future. This MOOC presents a full picture, although very concise, of present and emerging technologies for wastewater treatment, presented by professors teaching at Politecnico di Milano.

Water for Liveable and Resilient Cities (FutureLearn)

Learn how water can be used in the planning of cities to improve liveability in the face of climate change and population growth. Water plays a central role in almost every aspect of our urban environment and quality of life in our cities. Alarmingly, the combined impacts of rapid population growth and climate change are now posing a severe threat to the liveability and resilience of our cities.

Water: an essential resource (POK)

The challenge of protection from chemical and microbiological hazards. This MOOC wants to communicate the challenge of protecting water and then human health from chemical and microbiological hazards, as well as the multidisciplinarity required by this challenge by providing some key elements about water quality, protection and remediation, sustainable drinking water production, online monitoring, and finally advanced computing for process control.

The Challenge of Global Water Security (FutureLearn)

An introduction to the challenges of water security on a local and global scale. How do we achieve water security for everyone? Over the next 30 years it is estimated that 80% of the world’s population will live in areas with high levels of water scarcity. How do we manage this so that we can ensure global water security for both people and ecosystems?

Sustainable Urban Water Systems (POK)

Solutions for Sustainable Water Management in Resilient Smart Cities. The MOOC “Sustainable Urban Water Systems” aims to provide knowledge about modern and sustainable solutions for urban water management in water-sensitive cities. The focus is on stormwater control and water supply strategies for the mitigation of effects on the water cycles due to human settlements and climate change. In particular, the integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into urban drainage systems, the use of alternative water resources, and the reduction of losses and waste, make cities more resilient and add benefits to both the environment and community.

Dynamics and Control (edX)

This is an interactive course about the basic concepts of Systems, Control and their impact in all the human activities. First, the basic concepts of systems, dynamics, structure and control are introduced. Then, looking at many examples in Nature and human made devices, we will realize that the dynamic behavior of most systems can be modified by adding a control system. Later we will see how knowing how to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a system and measure its performance will provide the tools to design new controlled systems fulfilling some requirements.

Water Works: Activating Heritage for Sustainable Development (edX)

Address contemporary challenges from a socio-spatial and cultural perspective, and activate water heritage for decision-making in water management. Water has served and sustained societies throughout history. Understanding the complex and diverse water systems of the past is key to devising sustainable development for the future with regard to socioeconomic structures, policies, and cultures. Today, past systems form the framework for preservation and reuse as well as for new proposals.
