Specialised Cells (edX)

An introduction to cell physiology. Learn how specialized cells perform specific functions. The human body is composed of trillions of cells working together to perform essential body functions. Cells operate in a regulated internal environment, with different types of cells having unique properties suited to their specific functions.

In this course we will dive into the complex world of human physiology, starting at the cellular level. We will explore the core concept of homeostasis, where the body adjusts its internal environment to survive external challenges. We will investigate the key role of the cell membrane in separating body fluids. The variety of cells that exist in our bodies is also examined, with a particular interest on the how cells adhere, adjust and interact with other cells in their local environment. Finally, neurons are examined, with their specialized electrical signalling capabilities.
This interactive course incorporates videos, insights from experts in human physiology and assessment that tests your new understanding of cell physiology.
This course is part of the Systems Physiology Professional Certificate.

What you'll learn

  • Develop a knowledge of specialised cells in the human body.
  • Appreciate the fundamental role of the nervous system in regulating body functions.
  • Develop an understanding of how cells adhere and interact with neighbouring cells

The Little Stuff: Energy, Cells, and Genetics (Coursera)

In this course, we will explore the smaller side of biology: molecular biology. We’ll cover basic topics including cell biology and how cells can go “rogue” and turn into cancer, how energy from the sun is transferred to fuel our bodies, basics of genetics and inheritance, and genetic technologies. At the end of this course, we will discuss ethical and moral implications of several exciting and new genetic technologies.

How Does the Body Use DNA as a Blueprint? (FutureLearn)

Get an introduction to the basics of molecular biology, and how DNA code works. Find out how the body repairs and regulates itself. Every part of the body is made according to a code that is carried in the body’s cells. This code is called DNA, and knowing how it works is fundamental to understanding how the body regulates itself throughout our lives.

Cardiovascular & Respiratory Systems (edX)

Gain insight into the complexities of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and how gases and nutrients are regulated in healthy humans. The human body is an amalgamation of specialised and complex systems. Normal, healthy body functions rely on a symphony of these systems, dynamically working in concert to keep us in a stable homeostatic state. This course begins by examining the unconscious regulation of body systems by the autonomic nervous system, helping us respond when homeostasis is challenged.

Anatomy of the Upper and Lower Extremities (Coursera)

This course has two main parts, one for the lower extremity and the other for the upper extremity. We will show how the various systems that supply and organize the limb control its function. There are a set of introductory lectures which will allow more experienced students to refresh their knowledge of the limbs and a guide to those with less experience. These lectures will be followed by detailed dissections of the extremities emphasizing locomotion for the lower extremities and hand positioning and function for the upper extremities.

Learn from leading global experts about the benefits of physical activity and how to prevent and treat injuries. This health course will show you why exercise is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is more than just an “art of converting big meals and fattening snacks into back strains and pulled muscles by lifting heavy things that don’t need to be moved, or running when no one is chasing you.” (Anonymous quote) Our bodies evolved to move over several millennia.
