Introduction à l'astrophysique (edX)

What you'll learn:

  • Vision globale de l'univers depuis les échelles planétaires au échelles cosmologiques (Global perception of the universe from planetary to cosmological scales)
  • Les échelles de temps et d'espace qui caractérisent les objets celestes (Typical temporal and spatial scales in celestial bodies)
  • Les processus physiques expliquant notre perception des astres (Physical processes at play in astronomical objects)

Cosmic Rays, Dark Matter, and the Mysteries of the Universe (edX)

Join us on a unique exploration of one of the universe’s deepest mysteries: cosmic rays. In the Universe, high-energy cosmic rays are violently propagating in space. While we know these cosmic rays come from outside of the solar system, exactly how and where they originate is a mystery. Professor Shoji Torii from Waseda University and many researchers from around the world, believe that understanding about their origin will help resolve the mysteries of the Universe, such as, supernova remnants, dark matter, and even the Universe’s evolution.

Quantum Mechanics for Scientists and Engineers 1 (edX)

This 9 week course aims to teach quantum mechanics to anyone with a reasonable college-level understanding of physical science or engineering. Quantum mechanics was once mostly of interest to physicists, chemists and other basic scientists. Now the concepts and techniques of quantum mechanics are essential in many areas of engineering and science such as materials science, nanotechnology, electronic devices, and photonics.

Super-Earths And Life (edX)

Learn about the Earth, life, and how we can search for life elsewhere in the universe. Are we alone in this universe? What new information and observations on exoplanets have we discovered? In the past decade, astronomers have made incredible advances in the discovery of planets outside our solar system. Thirty years ago, we knew only of the planets in our own solar system. Now we know of thousands circling nearby stars.

Quantum Mechanics (edX)

Learn the quantum mechanics needed to prepare you for the second quantum revolution (focused on quantum sensing). We use a new way to teach quantum for undergraduates by focusing on conceptual ideas and operator manipulations. This allows us to discuss more applications to experiment usually done. You need a background in the full calculus sequence and in math methods. Freshman physics and modern physics is recommended. This course is appropriate for physicists, chemists and engineers.

The Basics of Transport Phenomena (edX)

Learn the basic framework to work on a broad spectrum of engineering problems concerning transfer of heat, mass and momentum. Learn through examples of everyday processes at home, in the lab and in industry. Have you ever wondered why ventilation helps to cool down your hot chocolate? Do you know why a surfing suit keeps you warm? Why iron feels cold, while wood feels warm at room temperature? Or how air is transferred into aqueous liquids in a water treatment plant? How can we sterilize milk with the least amount of energy? How does medicine spread in our tissue? Or how do we design a new cooling tower of a power plant? All these are phenomena that involve heat transfer, mass transfer or fluid flow.

Advanced Transport Phenomena (edX)

Learn how to tackle complex mass and heat transfer problems and apply the results in your own environment. How can you reduce the energy loss of your home? What is the underlying science of energy loss in pipes? Which heat and mass transfer problems do we have to tackle to make consumer products? In this engineering course, you will learn about the engineering principles that play an important role in all of these and more phenomena. You will learn about microbalances, radiation, convection, diffusion and more and their applications in everyday life.
