Energy Services (IST)

Energy Services (IST)

This course introduces the concept of energy services and presents the modeling principles to design sustainable energy systems. The course will occur through a self-paced methodology, which means that will be open for a longer period and all the materials and evaluation are already available. Since there are not delivery limits, each participant can finish the course when most opportune during a year (15th March 2019 - 15th March 2020).

The main goals of this course are:
• Understand the energy service concept
• Identify the required energy services in different energy systems contexts
• Know the level of energy services around the world
• Model different energy services
• Estimate the energy services requirements

Contents:
• Energy concepts (energy systems, energy definitions, tools to describe energy systems, energy consumption around the world)
• Energy Services (energy services definition, energy services in buildings, energy consumption in buildings)
• Energy services requirements (thermal comfort, hot water, visual comfort)
• Energy services modeling (heating and cooling, hot water, cooking, lighting, others)
The contents will consist of a series of videos for each topic, where each video covers a sub topic. The videos will be complemented by lecture notes, FAQ and discussion forums.
The course will occur through a self-paced methodology, which means that will be open for a longer period and all the materials and evaluation are already available. Since there are not delivery limits, each participant can finish the course when most opportune during a year.

The prerequisites for this course are:

  • Understand the energy, work and heat concepts
  • Know the first and second laws of thermodynamics
  • Know the heat transfer mechanisms

Assessment
The course is divided in 4 topics. For each subtopic, there will a quiz that needs to be answered to allow the progress to the next subtopic. To move forward to the next topic, the quiz needs to be positively answered. The weight on the final grade of all the quizzes (homework) completed is 10%.
For each topic, there will be a mid-term evaluation that needs to be positively assessed to allow the progress for the next topic. This exercise is individually and once completed the 4 mid-term evaluations it will count 50% for your final grade.
After completing all the topics, there will be an overall exercise which weight on the final grade is 40%.

Particle Dynamics (Coursera)

This course teaches dynamics, one of the basic mechanics subjects of Mechanical Engineering. Students would be able to organize their knowledge about force and motion, work-energy, impulse-momentum in view of Newton's 2nd law and its integration over time and displacement. The Engineering Dynamics consists of two parts: particle dynamics and rigid body dynamics.

Education on climate change, energy and ecological footprint (Coursera)

This course explores key concepts of climate change, such as climate, terrestrial systems, and energy. Their relationships are analyzed, and a diagnosis is proposed to promote school awareness of the short-term and long-term causes and effects of climate change. Additionally, the identification of local and global actions to mitigate it is encouraged.

Introduction to Thermodynamics: Transferring Energy from Here to There (Coursera)

This course provides an introduction to the most powerful engineering principles you will ever learn - Thermodynamics: the science of transferring energy from one place or form to another place or form. We will introduce the tools you need to analyze energy systems from solar panels, to engines, to insulated coffee mugs. More specifically, we will cover the topics of mass and energy conservation principles; first law analysis of control mass and control volume systems; properties and behavior of pure substances; and applications to thermodynamic systems operating at steady state conditions.

Introduction to solar cells (Coursera)

How do solar cells work, why do we need, and how can we measure their efficiency? These are just some of the questions Introduction to solar cells tackles. Whether you are looking for general insight in this green technology or your ambition is to pursue a career in solar, “Introduction to Solar Cells” is an excellent starting point. The course is a tour through the fundamental disciplines including solar cell history, why we need solar energy, how solar cells produce power, and how they work. During the course we cover mono- and multi-crystalline solar cells, thin film solar cells, and new emerging technologies.

21st Century Energy Transition: how do we make it work? (Coursera)

Affordable, abundant and reliable energy is fundamental to human well-being and prosperity. For the past 150 years, more and more people have gained access to energy, primarily in the form of fossil fuels – coal, petroleum and natural gas. But now, even while half of humanity cannot access adequate energy supplies, we are beginning a profound transition to more diverse energy sources. Climate change, environmental sustainability, and energy poverty are all important – and sometimes conflicting – drivers as we strive to supply more energy to more people with fewer negative impacts on Earth’s environments.

Mechanics: Motion, Forces, Energy and Gravity, from Particles to Planets (Coursera)

Most of the phenomena in the world around you are, at the fundamental level, based on physics, and much of physics is based on mechanics. Mechanics begins by quantifying motion, and then explaining it in terms of forces, energy and momentum. This allows us to analyse the operation of many familiar phenomena around us, but also the mechanics of planets, stars and galaxies.
