Stijn Mertens

Stijn received an MSc in Bioscience Engineering from KU Leuven in 2013. He did his master thesis in the VIB-KU Leuven lab for Systems Biology led by Kevin Verstrepen in 2012-2013 for which he was awarded the annual MSc thesis prize of the Royal Society of Brewing Schools. He stayed in the same lab for his PhD research, where he worked on broadening the aromatic spectrum of lager yeast. During his PhD, he also became the head brewer of the university's new 5hL pilot brewery. Since 2019, Stijn is a postdoctoral researcher in the Verstrepen lab, where he manages industrial projects as well as brew beer in the lab's pilot brewery. Since December 2019, Stijn works as a Global Process Development Specialist at Anheuser-Busch InBev.
