Barbara Oakley

Barbara Oakley, PhD, PE, is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and writer of national acclaim.
Dr. Oakley's research focuses on the complex relationship between neurocircuitry and social behavior. Oakley is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award, John D. and Dortha J. Withrow Teaching Award, Naim and Ferial Kheir Teaching Award, and she was designated as NSF New Century Scholar. She has also received the NSF Antarctic Service Medal following her work as a communications expert at the South Pole Station. Prior to her academic career, Oakley also rose from the ranks of Private to Captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar. Oakley is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the author of Coldblooded Kindness (Prometheus Press, 2011), Evil Genes (Prometheus Press, 2008), and Hair of the Dog (WSU Press, 1996). She was also lead editor of Pathological Altruism (Oxford University Press, 2012) and co-editor of Career Development in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Springer, 2008).
