Terrorismes (FUN)

Offered by le cnam,
Terrorismes (FUN)

Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Comparing Theory and Practice (Coursera)

Terrorism has arguably been one of the defining factors of our age. It frequently makes headlines, threatening or attacking governments, private business and ordinary citizens. And in many parts of the world, it has been one of the most important threats to peace, security and stability. But what does this exactly mean? What is the nature of this threat? Who or what is threatened, how, by whom and why? What can be done about it or how can we at least limit the impact of terrorism and make sure that terrorists do not make headlines and manage to scare us? These are just a handful of questions that will be addressed in this course that consists of three parts.

A History of Violence: From the Middle Ages to Modern Times (edX)

Examine the origins, changing nature, uses, and attitudes towards human violence in western history. What is violence? What do we mean by it? Is it innate or learned? Are we becoming more or less violent? These are all questions that we will ask throughout this course. A History of Violence will examine the different types of violence that humans have practiced over the centuries, put them into historical context, and try to understand why those different forms of violence are used at particular times, and not others; why some kinds of violence are accepted in some parts of the world but not others?

Children Deprived of Liberty: Learning from the UN Global Study (GCHumanRights)

Despite the fact that the Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms that, in principle, children should not be detained and deprivation of liberty should be a measure of last resort, millions of children in the world are locked away. To address this problem, the United Nations appointed Manfred Nowak as Independent Expert to lead the Global Study on children deprived of liberty. This unique MOOC stems from this study and provides insights, learning and recommendations in this important area at the crossroad of children, violence, and human rights studies.

Violence Against Healthcare (Coursera)

At the global level, there are many countries marked by violence affecting health care. The 'Health care in danger' project aims to establish practical measures and recommendations that can be implemented on the ground by policy-makers, humanitarian organizations and health professionals. In view of the multiplicity of actors and latitudes concerned, it is essential to be able to make available the tools needed to make informed decisions, guide behaviour in high-risk areas and provide everyone the means to create and optimize the dialogue between humanitarian professionals and health on the one hand and relevant authorities or other armed actors.
