Next Generation Biosecurity: Responding to 21st Century Biorisks (FutureLearn)

Learn about biosecurity, biosafety and bioethics, and why they're vital - inside and outside of the lab. Explore biosecurity and learn how to respond to biological threats. Today’s world is facing more biological threats than ever, from mutations to antibiotic resistance to new diseases and increased access to engineered diseases. It’s vital that scientific research is being carried out safely to protect those who work in the lab as well as wider communities.

On this course you will get an introduction to these issues, exploring biosecurity, biological threats and how to counter them in your work. You will also learn about responding to biological challenges and learn to examine issues in the lab.
What topics will you cover?

  • Introduction to biosecurity
  • Biological threats and challenges
  • Responding to biological challenges: what you can do inside the lab
  • Responding to biological challenges: what is done outside the lab
  • Responsible conduct of science: learning to critically examine security issues arising with the lab and formulate responses

What will you achieve?
By the end of the course, you'll be able to...

  • Understand and explain the need for laboratory biosafety and biosecurity, and what these entail
  • Describe the biosecurity challenges facing the 21st century, especially as the revolution in life sciences continues
  • Discuss how biosecurity policies, practices and guidelines are developed at international and national levels and how to contribute to these processes
  • Identify areas of security and ethical concern within the life sciences and reflect on strategies and approaches to deal with them as they arise
  • Summarise what it means to be safe in the lab, how to apply these principles and what to expect from others to keep you and the community safe from accidental and deliberate actions

Causes of Human Disease: Exploring Cancer and Genetic Disease (FutureLearn)

Explore how the unravelling of genetic code has led to a deeper understanding of genetic diseases and cancer. It’s widely known that some diseases run in families. The discovery of the structure of DNA and the unravelling of the genetic code has led to a deeper understanding of such diseases. We now know more about the genetic basis of cancer and how cancer cells are formed and reproduce. On this course you’ll explore the structure of DNA, its processes and learn how genetic disease results from DNA alterations.

Ethics in Life Sciences and Healthcare: Exploring Bioethics through Manga - Part 2 (edX)

Learn about the ethical decisions surrounding critical health and life science issues vital to your life through Manga. Is it permissible to create human clones? Would you really want to live forever? Is brain death the death of a human being? These controversial questions will be explored through stories in Manga in this bioethics course. Bioethics is an interdisciplinary field of study that looks into ethical, legal, and social implications of life sciences and health care.

Engineering Life: Synbio, Bioethics & Public Policy (Coursera)

Synbio is a diverse field with diverse applications, and the different contexts (e.g., gain-of-function research, biofuels) raise different ethical and governance challenges. The objective of this course is to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of ethical and policy/governance issues that arise in the design, conduct and application of synthetic biology. The course will begin with a short history of recombinant DNA technology and how governance of that science developed and evolved, and progress through a series of areas of application of synbio.
