To get the most out of the video course, naturally it would help if you already have a WordPress website. That way, you can implement everything the course talks about right away. However, this isn’t strictly necessary as learning the principles of mobile friendliness will also help you if your website is powered by another platform.

As a WordPress user, you should be familiar with the platform’s interface. You need to know your way around, how to install themes and plugins and make changes to your site. Skills in HTML and CSS would not hurt but they are not a prerequisite. Being well versed in technical things generally also helps.

As a class project, I encourage you to implement at least one aspect of the course on your own website. As you follow along, check your own site for what is missing in your mobile experience and make it a point to remedy at least one shortcoming you discover.

When you do, document it and share it with the class. Ideally, show the situation before the changes, how you determined it needs fixing and the steps you took to make your site more mobile friendly. Then, show the end result of your efforts.
