Introduction to Algae (Coursera)

Introduction to Algae (Coursera)

This course was produced by the Algae Technology Educational Consortium and UC San Diego with funding from the Algae Foundation, the National Renewable Energy Lab, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Algae are an extremely diverse group of organisms that can be found in almost every ecosystem on the planet, and they play an essential role for life on earth. They are little bio-factories that use the process of photosynthesis to create chemical compounds that we can utilize for food, feed, medicine, and even energy. We’ve brought together some of foremost algae experts from industry and academia to teach you the fundamentals of algae.

This course will cover what algae are, why they are important, and why we are interested in them for both their environmental benefit, as well as their use for products. You will also explore the vast diversity of algae including the characteristics and applications of some of the main types of algae that are in commercial use today.
Later you will learn about algal ecology and how interactions with environment, including pests and predators, affect algal productivity. And finally you will examine the processes of algae bio-manufacturing including production processes, as well as some of the products, benefits, and challenges that impact our ability to make commercially viable products from algae.

Syllabus

WEEK 1
Algae Basics
This section will cover what algae are, how they've evolved, and how they've transformed our planet. We will also go over how humans have used algae throughout history.

WEEK 2
Algal Diversity
Algae are extremely diverse, and in this section you will learn about the main different types.

WEEK 3
Algal Ecology
Algae are found almost everywhere and have complex ecologies. This section covers the basics of algal ecology including some of the other organisms they interact with in nature and in industrial settings.

WEEK 4
Algae Biomanufacturing Part 1
Algae are studied because of their potential to create products using biomanufacturing. In this section, we will look at how algae is used as an industrial organisms and different examples biomanufacturing technologies.

WEEK 5
Algae Biomanufacturing Part 2
In this section we will examine the important steps of algae biomanufacturing. This includes techniques for productive culture growth, harvest, and creating useful products from biomass.

Algae Biotechnology (Coursera)

For decades, researchers have been studying microalgae to understand their biological functions and how we can use technology to harness algae’s power to create a wide range of commercial products. In this course, we will cover how synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and metabolic engineering is used in algae biotechnology, and also examine the current state of algae biotechnology research and tools. We’ll also explore some of the common bio-products we can make from algae, and take a look at some real-world algae companies that are using algae biotechnology to create products consumers can buy today.

Reclaiming Broken Places: Introduction to Civic Ecology (edX)

Explore why and how people come together to care for nature and community in cities and after disasters. The actions of ordinary people are often absent in studies of urban renewal and urban ecology. Around the world, people who are fed up with environmental degradation and the breakdown of their communities come together to transform blighted vacant lots, trashed-out stream corridors, polluted estuaries, and other “broken places.”

Life Below Water: Conservation, Current Issues, Possible Solutions (FutureLearn)

Explore the human impact on underwater biodiversity, ecosystems, and animals, and solutions for preserving life below water. Develop knowledge and research skills in marine conservation. It is widely accepted that the phenomenal biodiversity within underwater ecosystems and habitats has been very negatively affected by human interaction. The exact nature and course of the damage, and what can be done about it, are not as clearly understood. This four-week course by the University of the Sunshine Coast aims to change that.

Biological Diversity (Theories, Measures and Data sampling techniques) (Coursera)

The course presents an overview of the theory behind biological diversity evolution and dynamics and of methods for diversity calculation and estimation. We will become familiar with the major alpha, beta, and gamma diversity estimation techniques. Understanding how biodiversity evolved and is evolving on Earth and how to correctly use and interpret biodiversity data is important for all students interested in conservation biology and ecology, whether they pursue careers in academia or as policy makers and other professionals (students graduating from our programs do both). Academics need to be able to use the theories and indices correctly, whereas policy makers must be able to understand and interpret the conclusions offered by the academics.
