Hossam Haick




Hossam Haick is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. (direct track) in Chemical Engineering from the Ben-Gurion University (1998) and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (2002), respectively. After a two-year period at the Weizmann Institute of Science (2002-2004), he moved to the California Institute of Technology - Caltech (2004-2006) for a postdoctoral research and to the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor in 2006. As a recruitment of the Technion, Prof. Haick has made a significant mark through his development of a nano-array technology to detect cancer, which earned him a wide variety of awards and grants, including the prestigious Marie Curie Excellence Award in 2006 and ERC Award in 2010. More recently, Prof. Haick leads a European consortium of eight universities and companies for the development of advanced generation of nanosensors for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of lung cancer.

Prof. Haick has received several awards for his research, including a Knight of the Order of Academic Palms (Chevalier dans l'Ordres des Palmes Académiques), the list of the world’s 35 leading young scientists for 2008 of the prestigious scientific journal MIT’s Technology Review, the Horev Chair for Leaders in Science and Technology, the "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" Prize in Chemical Engineering, the Discovery Program Award of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the OXYGEN Prize, the Norman and Barbara Seiden Prize, the Israel-France Award for Academic Excellence, the Herschel Rich Innovation Award (2008, 2011), the Minerva Short-Term Research Award, the Bergmann Award for Excellent Young Scientists, the CREATE Award, the Al-Qendil Prize, and the YMCA and Rotary Honorary Decorations. In addition, Prof. Haick was selected for the lists of “Ten Most Promising Young Israeli Scientists” of Calcalist (2010), “Young Israelis of the Year” of the Jerusalem Post” (2010), “50 Leading Israelis for 2007” and “four saluted Israeli scientists” (2007) of Yedioth Aharonot. Other honors and awards include the Fulbright fellowship, ‘Israel Ministry of Science and Technology' awards, Prof. Avrahami prize, and CNR-IMIP prize.

Besides his recent and past achievements in research, he had excellent achievements as a lecturer, expressed by a wide variety of prizes that he received for (constantly) excellence in teaching (top 4%). Prof. Haick is the recipient of the prestigious "Yanai Prize for Academic Excellence", which is given for exceptional and significant contribution in teaching and academic education. Prof. Haick had also worked as a supervisor for a broad range of talented graduate and undergraduate students worldwide. Prof. Haick serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine, review editor of the Frontiers in Pharmacology of Anti-Cancer Drugs, and member of the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Nanoscience Letters, Hybrid Materials, Dataset Papers in Physical Chemistry, Frontiers in Respiratory Pharmacology, etc. Prof. Haick serves as an advisory consultant to the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) – the world's authority for chemical information - a senior scientific advisory member of several national and international companies and institutes, and as a scientific evaluator in the European Commission.

The research interests of Prof. Haick include nano-array devices for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of disease, nanomaterial-based chemical sensors, breath analysis, volatile biomarkers, molecule-based electronic devices, and electronic charge transport through organic molecules.

Nanotechnology and nanosensors are broad, interdisciplinary areas that encompass (bio)chemistry, physics, biology, materials science, electrical engineering and more. The present course will provide a survey on some of the fundamental principles behind nanotechnology and nanomaterials and their vital role in novel sensing properties and applications. The course will discuss interesting interdisciplinary scientific and engineering knowledge at the nanoscale to understand fundamental physical differences at the nanosensors.

Learn about novel sensing tools that make use of nanotechnology to screen, detect and monitor various events in personal or professional life. Together, we will lay the groundwork for infinite innovative applications, starting from diagnosis and treatments of diseases, continuing with quality control of goods and environmental aspects, and ending with monitoring security issues.

هو مساق للمهتمين في التعرف على أدوات الاستشعار الحديثة التي تستعين بتقانة النانو (وهي التقانة التي تبحث في المجال بين واحد إلى مئة نانوميتر، أي في أجزاء من المليار من المتر) لفرز ومراقبة الأحداث المختلفة في حياتنا الشخصية أو العملية. في أطار المساق، سنكتشف معا عالم النانو المذهل الذي يتعامل مع الوحدات الأساسية في بناء المادة. وبهذا سوف نمهد الطريق لتطبيقات إبداعية لانهائية تطبق في كل جزء من حياتنا اليومية، بدءا من تشخيصات وعلاجات (في الجسم الحي أو خارجه) للأمراض، وثم نستمر في تقانة مراقبة جودة المنتوجات وما يختص بالبيئة، وننهي في تقانة مراقبة القضايا الأمنية. سنتعلم في هذا السعي كيف نصَنع هذه الأدوات الجديدة، وكيف نميزها، وكيف نتحكم بها، وكيف ندمجها في التطبيقات المختلفة.
