Yannick Vermeiren

Dr. Yannick Vermeiren works as an assistant professor at the division of Human Nutrition & Health at Wageningen University & Research. His research focusses on the study of preventative measures against Alzheimer’s disease by looking at prebiotics, diet and lifestyle, and the gut-brain axis. Dr. Vermeiren wants to combine neuroscientific insights on brain ageing and nutritional neurochemistry to promote the role of nutrition as the primary strategy to reduce dementia risk. As academic teaching activities are concerned, he coordinates BSc and MSc courses about Nutrition and the Brain, and Interventions for Healthy Ageing.
Dr. Vermeiren was trained as a biomedical scientist with a specialization in neurosciences at the University of Antwerp. He obtained his PhD in 2015 on the neurochemistry of behavioral disturbances in dementia, for which he received the Santkin prize for Alzheimer research by the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine (2016). Additionally, he received the annual prize in Science Communication in 2019, awarded by the Royal Flemish Academy for Science and Arts. Currently, he also serves as an Associate Editor with the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience and holds a guest professor’s appointment at the University of Antwerp (Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences), where he is still involved in biomarker studies in dementia.
