American Literature to 1865 (ENGL 3350) (WMA)
Critical examination of major & selected minor writers from the colonial period through Hawthorne & Melville. Covers the literary works; their background, their content, & their authors. But also an ability to interpret fiction, poetry, & nonfiction prose, also a familiarity with the terminology used by historians & literary critics.

The examination emphasizes fiction & poetry and deals to a lesser degree with the essay, drama, & autobiography.
