Originally qualified as a Dental Technician, gaining a BMedSci in the subject from the University of Sheffield in 1996. A PhD in materials science at Sheffield followed, and while doing this I began to become interested in learning and teaching. I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and then an MEd in e-Learning (both part time) while I worked as a post-doc on an FDTL inter-professional learning project. I was appointed University Teacher in 2005, and Senior University Teacher in 2008.
