National Chiao Tung University

National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College. It shares the same origin as the Jiaotong Universities in mainland China. In 1958, NCTU was re-established in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and has been the forerunner of science and technology. The University has laid a firm foundation for the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP), the “Silicon Valley” of Taiwan, with its strong and outstanding alumni network. Nearly two-thirds of the chief executive offers or general managers in the HSP are NCTU alumni.
NCTU offers a wide spectrum of disciplines in its colleges, including engineering, science, technology, management, humanities, and law. It currently has more than 15,000 enrolled students, with about 800 international students from more than 60 countries. The University provides students with an excellent learning and research environment by providing the state-of- the-art equipment and facilities. In the meanwhile, it boasts one of the most picturesque campuses in Taiwan, with delightful gardens and marvelous sculptures.
The University has always believed that high quality education resources should not be the rights of a few and should be made available to as many people as possible. Based on this belief, NCTU was the first university to launch Open Course Ware (OCW) website in the Chinese-speaking societies in 2007. Subsequently, the University established the first massive open online course (MOOC) platform in the Chinese-speaking world in 2013: “ewant” open education platform. Since then, more than 65 top universities from Taiwan and Mainland China have joined the platform and offered over 200 courses, making “ewant” the most prominent MOOC platform in Taiwan.
