Bert Blocken




Bert Blocken is professor and chair of Building Physics at the Unit Building Physics and Services (BPS) of the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. He is also a part-time full professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at Leuven University, in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium (from 01/10/2013), and a Guest Lecturer at ETH Zurich and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. He graduated from Leuven University in 1998 as Master in Civil Engineering on a thesis in Structural Mechanics. From 1998 to 2003, he held a PhD scholarship from IWT-Flanders. In 2004, he earned his PhD at the same university at the Laboratory of Building Physics, Department of Civil Engineering. From 2004 to 2006, he held the postdoctoral fellowship of the Fund for Scientific Research in Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen) for two years, one of which was spent at Concordia University in Montreal. In June 2006, he was appointed as assistant professor at the unit BPS and in January 2009, he was appointed as associate professor at the same unit. Since April 2011, he is appointed as full professor and as chair of Building Physics at the unit BPS.

His main areas of expertise are Urban Physics and Environmental Fluid Mechanics, and his research focuses on numerical modeling of wind flow and related processes in the urban environment at the micro-scale (horizontal length scales
He was the chair of the Scientific Committee of the 10th International Symposium on Computational Wind Engineering (CWE2010), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, US and the chair of the Scientific Committee of the 13th International Conference on Wind Engineering in 2011 (ICWE13), Amsterdam-Netherlands. He is the co-chair of the ASCE Task Committee on Computer-Aided Wind Engineering and a member of the ASCE Task Committee on Environmental Wind Engineering-Subcommittee Wind-driven Rain Effects. He is a lecturer for CISM and a co-organizer of the past 5 International Building Physics Summer Courses and co-organizer of the International Urban Physics Courses.

Have we reached the boundaries of what can be achieved in sports and building design? The answer is definitely “NO”. This course explains basic aspects of bluff body aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with application to sports and building aerodynamics. It is intended for anyone with a strong interest in these topics. Key fields addressed are urban physics, wind engineering and sports engineering.
