Julie N. Harris-Wai

Julie N. Harris, PhD, MPH, is a staff scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. She received her doctoral training at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington in public health genetics. Before her position at the Division of Research, Dr. Harris completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program at the University of California at San Francisco and Berkeley. Dr. Harris’s research interests include understanding the impact of emerging cancer genomic technologies on health and health disparities, and examining the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics. Her previous work has focused on how genomic information is communicated and disseminated within families and between providers and patients. In her current position, she is a member of the Ethical Legal and Social Implications/ Community Outreach and Engagement (ELSI/COE) core of the Research Program on Genes, Environment and Health (RPGEH). She uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine different ELSI related research questions and identifying appropriate methods for translating genomic technologies into clinical care. Dr. Harris’s other research focuses on developing methods for implementing and evaluating community based projects aimed at increasing colorectal cancer screening in underinsured and uninsured populations.
