Anna Mia Ekström

MD, MPH, PhD, Clinical Professor
Anna Mia Ekström is a clinical professor in infectious disease epidemiology focusing on HIV. Over the last 14 years, she has led a number of large research projects mainly in sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burkina Faso, South Africa), aiming at a more effective program implementation of HIV prevention and treatment in resource-poor health systems and high-risk contexts and subpopulations. Anna Mia has a combined a clinical professorship position at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden and works part-time as a clinical specialist in Infectious Diseases and HIV. She holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in quantitative methods from Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD in medical epidemiology from KI. She is a course coordinator for both undergraduate and graduate courses in global health, HIV and infectious diseases and a frequent lecturer.
Her areas of expertise include Epidemiology, Clinical Infectious Disease Medicine, Public health, Global Health, Health Systems and Maternal health. Key research areas include the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT), HIV/AIDS care and program implementation.
