The Helmut Schmidt university is one of the two universities in Germany, that serve the scientific study and the academic education of armed forces' officers. It increases the attractiveness of the profession and is pulse generator and service provider for the Federal Armed Forces.

The Helmut Schmidt University takes its tasks by research, theory and further training in the autonomy guaranteed by the responsible body and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

With its research infrastructure it strengthens the city of Hamburg as a center of knowledge.

It develops the courses of study and further training offer according to the state of the sciences as well as for further needs of military, economics and society. It stresses and develops the possibilities of multidisciplinarity in research and teaching between social, natural, economical and engineering sciences, in order to sharpen the profile of the graduates in national and international competition and to improve their future prospects. That applies at least by promoting junior scientists.

The Helmut Schmidt University is characterised by inner and outer openness and is guided by the aim to provide education by science for 21. century.
