Learn to create well-structured portrait paintings with convincing colors. We will begin by discussing comparative measuring, to get accurate proportions in the underpainting. Then we will move to color and concentrate on big form modeling, then defining the planes of the face and features, and finally glazing to fine-tune the details.

Upon completion of this class you will have a portrait painting which you are proud of.

We will utilize warm and cool lighting to achieve dynamic colors, giving a contemporary feeling to portraits painted with traditional techniques. You will learn how to achieve a better likeness as well as how to paint convincing African American flesh tones.

The beginner will learn fundamental principles such as how to mix colors and render form modeling. The more advanced student will discover how to take their work to the next level and achieve the finish that they desire.

Your assignment is to create a full color portrait painting! Follow along with me as I show you how to develop a solid and well structured underpainting, then move to color pay in mixing rich and lifelike flesh tones. From there you'll move to refining the features and details. This class is demonstrated in oils but could be applied to acrylics as well.

Let your painting dry between each stage. If you are using a drying medium such as Walnut Alkyd Medium, Drying Linseed Oil, or Liquin, it will be dry the next day. If you're just using linseed oil it may take a couple days to dry between layers (touch it lightly to check).

This class is demonstrated in oils but could be applied to acrylics as well.
