The main aim of this MOOC is to achieve basic functional proficiency for novice learners to communicate effectively in real life situations in English. The MOOC addresses basic linguistic elements required for the mastery and use of the English language to help novice learners have a practical command of basic language skills: Speaking, reading, writing and listening.

This MOOC focuses on basic linguistic elements in English

It is subdivided into 8 modules. It begins with Module 0 (zero) which contains the general presentation of the course. The module also contains a teaser in which pedagogic team members present the general overview of the MOOC. The remaining 7 Modules draw from a range of general topics as Basic Language Functions, Education, the Current Pandemic Disease, Travel and Tourism, Music, Technology Devices, Letter and Essay writing. In each of the modules, there are videos, reading texts and audios, discussion forums and exercises (formative, and summative at the end of the MOOC).




What you are expected to achieve

At the end of this MOOC, you should be able to demonstrate the following skills:

Reading: the ability to read English with understanding (understand the meaning of words in context, comment and answer questions on passages read, etc.).

Listening: the ability to understand English when it is spoken

Speaking: the ability to speak intelligibly (hold a basic conversation in English, pronounce words correctly, etc.).

Writing: the ability to write English correctly (spell words correctly, use appropriate vocabulary, write short, clear and simple sentences and paragraphs, describe, etc.).


HOW THE ACTIVITIES ARE STRUCTURED

Apart from Module Zero (0) which provides a general overview of the entire MOOC, the remaining 7 Modules draw from a range of general topics as Basic Language Functions, Education, the Current Pandemic Disease, Travel and Tourism, Music, Technology Devices, Letter and Essay writing as aforementioned. In each of the modules, there are videos, reading texts and audios, discussion forums and exercises (formative, and summative at the end of the MOOC).

VIDEO CAPSULES (PEDAGOGIC VIDEOS ): these videos introduce modules or capture specific units where the facilitators provide brief lectures, guidelines and objectives, or introduce a lesson; you will also find simulated videos taken directly from Youtube and embedded in some sections of the course for purpose of emphasis in order to facilitate your learning and progress.

FORMATIVE EXERCISES: these are exercises incorporated in each Unit that permit learners to measure their progress in the course; some of the exercises are graded and some are not.

DISCUSSION FORUM: there are discussions forum for you to interact with each other and the teacher. You will be able to interact as individuals, groups or as a class. In each case, you are expected to:

o Ask questions on issues that are not clear to you;

o Interact on the topic of discussion and contribute by reacting to you mates' opinions;

o You will also be enlightened in the fora through the discussions;

o Make it a habit to participate actively in the discussions so that you may also learn;


Requirements

The MOOC, Basic Linguistic Elements in English, is dedicated to learners with a French linguistic background taking English as second language. They should have had some basic linguistic knowledge of English in High School and can construct a simple sentence in English. They should be holders of a baccalauréat in any subject.

In addition, we recommend that learners should have a minimum of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) A1 to get the most from this course.
