BIM: from sketch to digital twin (Coursera)
If you want to master the basic tools of the modern design and civil engineer and to look into the future of architectural design, construction and maintenance of buildings, this course is for you. Building information models and digital twins became a necessity in planning, design, building design and building operations. During the course, you will acquire basic building information modeling skills, create your own project, learn how to draw up architectural and construction drawings and develop a construction schedule using modern software systems such as Autodesk Revit and Navisworks. As you explore advanced BIM tools, you will learn how to script in Dynamo and how to collaborate on projects and construction in BIM360.

In the final part of the course you will learn what digital twin of building is and how it can be used to predict all the operational costs of building maintenance.

We hope, that the course "BIM: from sketch to digital twin" will guide you into the world of Building Information Modeling. Upon completion of the course, you will receive the core competencies required to successfully launch your career in the field of Building Information Modeling.

Syllabus

WEEK 1

BIM Concept

Welcome to Module 1! Our speakers will present you the concept of BIM from sketch to digital twin. This week's practical course starts by installation of the Autodesk software: Revit Autodesk and Navisworks. You will be able to become the part of Autodesk Community and get free access to Autodesk software. Now when you are able to run Revit, enjoy its interface and get yourself familiar with the start screen and main panels. Enjoy working with files and navigation.

WEEK 2

Building Information Modeling

Welcome to Module 2! Now you are ready for in-depth knowledge. Our speakers will present you the background of BIM and Architectural model. You will review Revit modelling possibilities, by getting familiar with several projects of Saint-Petersburg Polytechnical university students. You will be able to and start with your own BIM model. This week's material starts by creation shapes and areas and proceeds to creation building informational model. You will learn how to work with the area, boundaries and grid. Once you have finished this week, you will be able to: design your own building by creating the walls and the roof, structural elements, doors and windows, levels of building, furniture and exterior and interior design features. You will be able to create topoplan using Toposurface in Massing&Site and to work with the building systems using MEP families.

WEEK 3

Basic work with BIM-Information

Welcome to Module 3! This week 's material is devoted to basic work with BIM information. You will learn how to create schedules for different purposes and how to make material schedule using Material Takeoff tool. Once you have finished this week, you will be able to: moderate schedules for different groups of objects like rooms, structural elements, doors and windows, etc.

WEEK 4

Coordination, Management and Quality Control

Welcome to Module 4! At the beginning we will demonstrate you how to work with the coordinate systems for complicated projects properly. One big project usually consists of huge number of projects. Just imagine BIM City with more than thousands of Revit files which represent virtual city. You will get familiarized with two different coordinate systems. Then you will learn how to manage and to control BIM project. We will use Navisworks software, a powerful program which allows to monitor, manage, combine projects, etc. You will be able to see your building from different View and manage the project by editing Revit elements and families. Did you know you can use Viewpoints of Navisworks to present project? We will show you simulating construction process. You will get an opportunity to create reviews in the project. The best tool in Navisworks to define intersections in elements is clash detectives. The essence of BIM consists mostly in opportunities to predict possible faults and intersections in comparison with CAD. Once you have finished this week, you will be able to: you will learn how to consider this tool in order to learn define clashes.

WEEK 5

Advanced BIM tools

Welcome to Module 5! This week is devoted to Advanced BIM applying. Dynamo is a graphical programming interface that lets you customize your building information workflow. first you will evaluate Dynamo logic in Revit to be able to use its advanced tool. We will demonstrate you how to use Dynamo player which allows to run created scripts and edit them. At the second part of the module you will be demonstrated multifunctional platform that allows to collect information about all work process as well as participants of construction. It's called BIM 360. Now you know how to manage daily workflow of any project stage using access to the platform via mobile or laptops. You will get new knowledge how to use Revit cloud work-sharing service, where designers can organize collaboration through BIM 360. At the end of the module you will be immersed in 4D modeling using Navisworks. We will show you how to create schedules with current workflow dates.

WEEK 6

Digital twins of buildings

Welcome to Module 6! This is the final week of the course and this week you understand what digital twin stands for and you will be able to observe it in Project Dasher.
