As a Psychology Major, you will learn to think critically and scientifically about human behavior and mental processes. You will work to understand human problems and provide practical solutions to them. Upon completion of the major, you will have a solid grasp on how thoughts, motivations, and feelings influence behaviors, and a strong background for advanced study in the field.
You will begin your studies with several required courses: PSYCH101, PSYCH201, and the co-requisites PSYCH202A and PSYCH202B. These introductory courses will provide you with a solid background in contemporary psychological theory and methodology. Due to the importance of biology and neurology in psychological inquiry, PSYCH203/BIO101 and PSYCH204/BIO102 will also be required. Finally, PSYCH205 and PSYCH206 provide detailed coverage of two of the most important areas of modern psychology. This core program will equip you with the tools necessary for the study of more complex areas of psychology, such as personality theory, neuropsychology, and learning.
You will also be required to take six electives. Two of these electives must be from the 300-level classes, and two must be from the 400-level classes. The 300-level courses will introduce a subject area in psychology for further exploration in one or multiple 400-level courses. 400-level courses are more advanced and more specific than the broader 300-level courses. At this advanced level, you will learn to integrate theory and experience in your studies of complex human behaviors.
In order to fulfill the requirements for this major, you must complete the core program (8 courses) and 6 electives of your choice (6 courses total — at least 2 at the 300 level and at least 2 at the 400 level) for a total of 14 courses.
