Global Problems of Population Growth (WMA)
This survey course introduces students to the important & basic material on population growth, human fertility, the demographic transition & population policy.

Topics include: the human & environmental dimensions of population pressure, demographic history; economic & cultural causes of demographic change, environmental carrying capacity & sustainability. Political, religious & ethical issues surrounding fertility: abortion, infanticide, contraception, son preference, government coercion, migration & the status of women. The lectures & readings attempt to balance theoretical & demographic scale analyses with studies of individual humans & communities. The perspective is global with both developed & developing countries included. Controversies on the causes, cures & effects of rapid population growth are also addressed.
