Career Counseling (Universiteplus)
This “Career Counseling” course will explore the basic principles and concepts involved in the career development as well as college and career decision making processes of individuals. It will focus on reconsideration of the roles & responsibilities of career counselors & clients in individual & group counseling. Participants will gaing knowledge of occupational-educational information & vocational testing that is applied to the process of career counseling.

The goals of this course are to enable students to:

1. understand and appreciate the impact major factors that influence career development;

2. understand how personal characteristics influence career development, career decision making, and choice;

3. understand major vocational development theories and theorists;

4. develop skills in understanding and interpreting information gathered and observed during college and career counseling sessions;

5. become knowledgeable in administering and interpreting major career assessments.

6. understand college and career planning processes, techniques, and available resources;

7. assist students/clients in choosing, entering, and succeeding in satisfying career, post-secondary education or avocations;

8. be able to help students/clients with job searching, including preparing effective resumes and learning effective interviewing techniques;

9. become knowledgeable about the relevant professional standards and ethical issues in doing career counseling;

10. become familiar with the most current and relevant research in the field, particularly research that illuminates the best practices in the field;

11. know technology-based college planning, career development applications and strategies.

12. discuss how to teach college and career planning in public schools;

13. become familiar with various sources of information about the labor market.
